Gemar Day in Sofia: Where Balloon Art Meets Bulgarian Tradition

On April 21st, Gemar Day arrived in Sofia for an event that stood out not only for its scale, but for its strong connection to local culture. Hosted by Ukrasi.com, the day brought together nearly 150 participants for an immersive experience shaped by creativity, craftsmanship, and tradition.

Guiding the sessions were Csati Gergo and Alexander Solomatin, who each interpreted Bulgarian heritage through balloon art in distinct and compelling ways.

Csati Gergo led the creation of a wearable costume inspired by the traditional Kuker figures—iconic characters known for their elaborate attire and symbolic role in folklore. The project challenged participants to think in three dimensions, combining structure, wearability, and visual impact into a single piece.

In parallel, Alexander Solomatin focused on pattern and composition, guiding attendees in the creation of a large-scale balloon carpet inspired by traditional Bulgarian motifs. The work required precision and repetition, translating textile-inspired geometry into balloon design with impressive attention to detail.

Throughout the day, tradition acted as a unifying thread, influencing both the creative direction and the atmosphere of the event. The setting was welcoming and festive, encouraging collaboration while maintaining a strong focus on technique and execution.

The scale of the event was equally remarkable: more than 30,000 balloons were used across the various builds, reflecting both the ambition of the projects and the level of engagement from participants.

Gemar Day Sofia demonstrated how balloon art can become a medium for cultural expression, blending innovation with heritage and offering new perspectives for professionals in the field.
